Retort Deep-Dive[edit | edit source]
Sanders voted in SUPPORT of assault weapons bans three time: 1994, 2003, and 2016 (which Nancy Pelosi nixed). Sanders has voted in favor of background checks, closing the gun-show loophole, and banning certain types of weapons (links below).
Sanders' position on gun laws reflects the complexity of the issue. I'm a strong supporter of gun regulation, and i support Sanders. At first, i was very disappointed to hear about Sanders' vote on the Brady bill. Then i looked deeper.
The single greatest reason this country cannot move forward on gun-control, climate change, health care, education, militarism, and other key issues is: MONEY IN POLITICS. Sanders is committed to getting money out of politics.
Economic struggles produce violence: Sanders was the only candidate serious about working to elevate the poor. Clinton, by contrast, represents the wealthy.
The NRA gives Sanders a D- rating. They've campaigned against him in every election for the past 25 years. Sanders seeks solutions everyone can agree on, which is why he's palatable to some Republicans.
Sanders' libertarianism is the reason he could capture some pro-gun votes. "Of the 15 Democrats who voted against the 2003 assault weapon ban [which Sanders SUPPORTED], many of them hailed from traditionally red states like Montana, Louisiana, Arkansas, Indiana, Alaska, North Carolina and both Dakotas. Others were in swing states like Virginia, Colorado and West Virginia who could face significant challenges."
Sanders is a realist-- he comes from a state with a lot of hunters, yet among the lowest rates of gun violence in the country. He represents his constitutents. Is his record perfect? Maybe not. Perfection is a fantasy no politician can live up to. "Far better than mainstream Democrats" is a reality Bernie Sanders CAN live up to.
I'm guessing you're a Clinton supporter, so i'm replying on that basis. Clinton is a realist too: "I respect the Second Amendment," she said. "I respect the rights of lawful gun owners to own guns, to use their guns. What might work in New York City is certainly not going to work in Montana." Note, a Clinton fundraiser was co-hosted by a former NRA lobbyist. And remember the hashtag "Annie Oakley"? Obama's a realist too: "I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns," said Obama.
